- Masses of rich carmine-red flowers in spring and early summer
- Forms low mats of evergreen foliage
- Ideal for containers and rock gardens
- Beautiful spring colour
Saxifraga āPurple Robeā covers the ground with carpets of rich carmine-red flowers in spring and early summer, over spreading mats of evergreen foliage. This low-growing perennial is an excellent groundcover plant for sunny areas, and also looks great in containers and rock gardens.
Sow indoors
Sow on the surface of pre-watered seed compost, in pots or trays, lightly pressing into the surface. Place in a propagator or bag at around 20°C in shade and allow 2-4 weeks for germination. Remove lid or bag and keep in cooler, brighter conditions after germination. If germination is poor after a few weeks, keep cold (4°C) for 4 weeks and then bring back into warmth.
Grow on
Transplant when seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow on in a sheltered spot outdoors, such as a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
Plant out
Plant out in a full sun or part-shade, in well-drained soil. Also suitable for containers, raised beds or rockeries.
Aftercare
Remove faded flowers during summer to prolong blooming. Add grit to improve drainage where necessary.
